Abstract

A heteropolysaccharide, PN, has been isolated and purified from the water soluble polysaccharide mixture extracted from ginseng leaves. The molecular weight of PN is about 1,900,000. It contains Ara, Rha, XyI, GalA, Gal,Glc and a small amount of unknown sugar. The molar ratio of the sugar is 8.1:0.8:1.0: 1.6:12.5:4.1 in the above order,PN was homogeneous,by ultracentrifugal analysis, gel filtration on sepharose 46 column, glass fiber paper electrophoresis and cellulose acetate film electrophoresis. The stucture of PN has been determined by pectinase degradation, partial hydrolysis, periodate oxidation, Smith degradation, methylation and GLC, GLC-MS analysis. The polysaccharide was found to have a branched structure. The main chain of the molecules was mostly composed of β-(1→3) linked galactoses. Side chains are attached to 0-4 and 0-6 of the galactose residues. There are about two branches to every three galactoses.
