Abstract

Abstract Heparan sulfate has become a very popular research subject in the glycobiology field because it plays a number of important roles in cancer, AIDS and Alzheimers disease. Recently, it is clear that the rare N-unsubstituted glucosamine residues in heparan sulfate plays important biological and pathophysiological roles in virus invasion, brain tissue lesions and proteoglycan recycling. Studies on GlcNH+3 residues in heparan sulfate will reveal the pathogenesis of some diseases, and offer improved diagnostic opportunities for the development of novel drugs. This review covers recent advances in the structure, biological function and biosynthesis of GlcNH+3 residues in heparan sulfate.
