Abstract:The protection of maltol on human neuroblastoma cell line (SH SY5Y)was investigated when cells were treated with reactive oxygen species. Human neuroblastoma cell line SH SY5Y was pretreated with 2 mmol/L maltol for 2 hours and then treated with hydrogen peroxide. The damages of membrane proteins and DNA, mitochondrial function, activation of NF κB and expression of IL 6 were studied. The damages of membrane proteins, DNA of cells and mitochondrial function were reduced, expression of IL 6 was also reduced and activation of NF κB was lower as compared with that without pretreatment by maltol. Maltol was shown to protect SH SY5Y cell from oxidative damage and maintain its normal functions.
