Abstract�� The phytoagglutinin in 16 species from Carrot Families (Umbelliferae) were screened. Lectins were found in the fruit of Daucus carota L. (Wild carrot) and Apium L. (Celery). The agglutinating activity of D. carota L. was stronger than that of Apium L. (Celery). Wild carrot lectin was isolated and purified by chromatography on CM-cellulose and DEAE-cellulose.The purity was identified by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The subunit molecular weight was determined as 32600 by SDS-PAGE. This lectin is stable to heat and acid, but not to alkali. It has no specificity to human blood types. It can agglutinate rabbit, mouse, cattle and chicken erythrocytes, but not toad erythrocyte. The activity of the lectin can be slightly inhibited by D-xylose and N-acetylgl-ucosamine. This lectin was identified to be a kind of glycoprotein which can be stained by shiff's reagent on the polyacrylamide gel. The sugar content is about 3.4% . This lectin contains large amout of glutamic acid, aspartate, arginine and serine.
